The Pat on Sports: Basketball Time in Tennessee

Well for pretty much every high school team I care about football season is over. It is now time to lay a little round ball.
Though football is my favorite sport basketball has provided me with some fun times as well. Jacksboro and LaFollette have had some epic battles over the years with each other as well as with other rival teams.
Campbell County High School has been a rollercoaster of basketball emotions over the last several years. Both teams have had their share of highlights and low points recently. Hopefully this year will have a lot more high lights.
The Cougars have a young talented team this year. An excellent group of sophomores could be poised to lead the Cougars back down the glory road they once walked upon yearly. This group had tons of success at the middle school level. With any luck they can duplicate this success on the high school level. It won’t be an easy task as they play in a district loaded with talent. This crew still has some growing up to do and nothing will mature a team faster than playing the Oak Ridges of the world.
On the Lady Cougar’s end of the court this will be a year of filling voids. Jessica Byrge graduated last year and Sierra Jessie chose not to return for her senior season. These leave two large gaps on the roster.
Several Lady Cougars will have to step up to fill the void. Nancy Reynolds has improved her game by leaps and bounds every season of her high school career. This year she will have to do so again, I am sure she is up to the task. Rebekah Powell will be called upon to step up her already good inside game. Knowing Coach Chapman she already has these two ready to move right into her departed players positions.
University of Tennessee basketball should be fun to watch this season as well. The Vols are coming off an incredible season and look to go even farther in the tournament this season. The Lady Vols are one of the premiere teams in women’s basketball. I’m sure the will have yet another great season.
I’ll admit I am more excited about this basketball season than usual. Maybe it is the fact I am happy to be covering sports again. It could be my new found knowledge of basketball from my recent gig as strength and conditioning coach for the Cumberland Gap Panthers basketball squad. All I know is that for the first time that I remember I am ready for basketball.
I implore you all to get out and support all of the local teams. You won’t be disappointed if you do.
