The Pat on Sports: How to bring state football titles to Campbell County

Well it is high school playoff time in Tennessee. It is an exciting time for football fans. Sadly most Campbell County fans never really get to experience that excitement.
A few weeks back a friend of mine, who happens to coach elsewhere, and I had a discussion about how to bring several state titles to Campbell County. Before anybody gets bent out of shape by this column I want you all to know it is written in good humor and is intended to be funny.
The best way to bring a state football title to Campbell County is to abolish the football program at Campbell County High School. Right now some of you are scratching your heads on how this would help. It is simple. TSSAA rules state that if a school in a county does not have a particular sport then student athletes may be bussed to another in county school that does have it.
That’s right we send all of our players to Jellico. Jellico has had some football success in the past. It has potential to do so again.
Imagine the success they could have had if a few years back they had the running back combo of Daniel Berry and Tommy Bowlin in their back field. Along with some linemen from CCHS to add depth to their line I doubt anybody would have stopped that ground game.
We all know that one of the biggest problems facing the Blue Devils is lack of numbers on their team. Imagine them with 30-50 extra players every year.
Imagine them joining forces with the 1996 undefeated Eagles team. Jellico would own at least three state titles in those four years.
In fact this year’s Jellico team had quite a bit of talent and a talented coaching staff. I am willing to bet a little depth and they could have really shocked the world.
Will this ever happen. Of course not. I don’t even encourage that it should. But if it did We would have several titles resting on top of our wonderful little mountain community. I think Jellico could do this on their own, I also think CCHS could. It is just a matter of everything coming together.
On a playoff note I want to encourage everybody to go support one of my two dearest friends in their playoff endeavors. Sean Jessie and the Cumberland Gap Panthers are traveling to take on Alcoa in their opening round playoff game. The panthers are a heavy underdog but after working with some of their kids in the weight room I know they will play their hearts out. David did beat Goliath after all. Also Rodney Ellison and the Bearden Bulldogs are headed west to take on the Faragut Admirals in the latest chapter of the Battle of West Knoxville. The Bulldogs fell to the Admirals earlier this season. It is very hard to beat a good team twice in the same year. Coach Wilson has turned the Bulldogs into a top-notch football program. This will be a real barnburner. Go out and support these guys. They gave a lot to Jacksboro and Campbell County football. I know they both still bleed a little blue.
